SHANS (Spectrometer for Heavy Atom and Nuclear Structure) is a gas-filled recoil separator with the type of QvDhQvQh configuration, where Q and D denote the quadrupole and dipole magnets, the subscripts v and h refer to vertical and horizontal, respectively. The nuclei to be studied are produced by heavy-ion induced fusion reactions. The evaporation residues (ERs) of interest are separated from the primary beam and the projectile-like and target-like fragments by the spectrometer, and then implanted into a detection system at the focal plane of the separator or delivered into a subsequent experimental setup.
